Prerequisite: Metalsmithing 1

In this class, you'll learn how to create matching earrings using basic anticlastic raising techniques. Anticlastic forming is a technique in which metal is shaped by hammering into curves that have opposing curvature on two axes. This creates graceful, three-dimensional shapes that are visually striking and comfortable to wear.

Throughout the class, you'll be guided by Pattie Parkhurst who will teach you the step-by-step process of creating these stunning earrings.

We'll cover:

  • Introduction to Anticlastic Forming:
    • Understanding the concept of anticlastic curves.
    • Learning about the tools and materials required for the project.
  • Metal Selection:
    • Exploring different metals suitable for anticlastic earrings, such as copper, silver, or gold.
  • Annealing and Preparing the Metal:
    • Annealing the metal to make it malleable for shaping.
    • Cleaning and polishing the metal surfaces.
  • Creating the Anticlastic Shape:
    • Using specialized hammers and stakes to shape the metal into graceful curves.
    • Understanding how to control the curvature and dimensions of the earrings.
  • No-Solder Ear Wires:
    • In one piece we will learn how to create the earring with an ear wire, no solder required.

By the end of the class, you'll have at least one set, possibly three, of stunning anticlastic earrings.  Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced metalsmith, this class will cater to all levels. Get ready to unleash your creativity and embark on an exciting journey into the world of anticlastic earrings!
