You’ll go from learning about lapidary equipment and safety procedures, to taking a slab of rock and turning it into a cabochon ready to bezel set or wire wrap.
Specific topics to be covered:
- How to bring out the natural designs and beauty of a slab
- Make straight angles and different styles of domes
- What Metalsmiths look for in a cabochon
- Different ways to dop your preformed cabochon
- How to end up with a water shine
- When and how to stabilize your slab
- How to make a doublet using UV resin
- Making a line item inventory list (template given out during class)
Trim saws and grinding/polishing machines are provided by the studio.
MATERIALS & TOOLS
Bring the following items with you:
- Gemstone slabs of your choice (agate or jasper highly recommended while learning)
- Apron
- Sharpie markers, thin and ultra-thin
- Eye protection
- Pen or pencil and paper for sketches and notes
- Respirator for stone cutting (3M Multip-Purpose Respirator with P100 filter, or 3M Quick Latch Respirator 6000 Series and P100 cartridges)
- Ear protection (foam earplugs or banded style are fine)
