This workshop deals with chiseling metal surfaces for decorative texture effects, deep carving and introductory inlay. The making of chisels is taught, basic steel theory addressed. The three main types of metal carving chisel forms are shared, Northern European and Asian methods shown.

While chiseled metal can be the goal, chiseling can carve steel to make rolling mill dies and dies for stamping precious and base metal sheet. Chiseled surfaces are superb under transparent enamels.

Also shown is ‘cloth area inlay’, a Japanese approach to attaching gold, silver and other foils to metal surfaces using a chisel to prepare it for attaching.

MATERIALS KIT FEE: $TBD Kit will include tool steel.
