Metal is a magical material that can be stretched, compressed, bent, curved and twisted. The same pattern can take on an entirely new shape depending on how it is formed. Use wood, steel, and hard and thermal plastic to create a toolbox full of tools to explore forming processes. Modify existing tools. Make blanking (pancake) dies to quickly cut out shapes.
Experiment with assembling forms by soldering and using cold connections. Jayne will give students a variety of shapes to work with as practice pieces to teach concepts and demonstrate the tools she created to develop each form.
Techniques taught:
• How to make your own forming tools and jigs for metal sheet
• How to easily modify metal tools
• Making flame ball and tube rivets
• Tips and tricks using flex shaft accessories
• Measuring, marking, and cutting wood and plastic
• Making blanking (pancake) dies
• Using the Jayne Redman Rotational Bench Pin or WorkRing System

Jayne Redman is known for her unusual way of working with metal in three dimensions, often using multiples of the same shape to convey a single idea. Using nature as her inspiration she considers combinations of form and function, integrating mechanics with design and applying innovative engineering methods. She has perfected the process of quickly duplicating shapes by cutting them out with blanking dies and then forming those shapes with tools and jigs of her invention.
