Introduction to Suzanne Williams’ Shadowbox Technique

Shadowboxes have long been an essential element in Suzanne Williams’ jewelry
creations. They represent her original approach to three-dimensional layering, a method
that provides depth and complexity to her work.

Dimensional Layering Inside the Box

Shadowboxes embody the concept of dimensional layering by bringing together multiple
elements within a contained space. This technique allows for intricate, multi-faceted
compositions that can be viewed from different perspectives within the box.

Suzanne Williams will offer a five-day workshop at Denver Jewelry Studio, focusing on shadowboxes. This marks the first time she will teach this specialized workshop. The process of developing imagery in shadowboxes is the original three-dimensional layering technique she began over thirty years ago. Suzanne has built upon this foundation to develop numerous additional layering techniques, which complement her current focus on creating clasping mechanisms for jewelry.

Workshop Learning Objectives: During the workshop, participants will explore several key aspects of shadowbox artistry, including:
 Designing three-dimensional compositions that are visually effective from both
side-to-side and front-to-back within a shadowbox.
 Fabricating the box itself - bending and forming the box frame and soldering the
box components together.
 Cutting out and fitting the interior elements into the box frame.
 Exploring texturing and imagery development for layers.
 Arranging elements/layers for optimal impact in the box and soldering them
securely into place.

 Constructing stone settings and exterior attachments including suspension
methods and chain attachments.
 Exploring methods for finishing out completed shadowboxes.
